Each morning I set the alarm on my phone for minutes earlier than I did the day before. I would start work for projects at night that I know I needed to finish soon. This is kind of embarrassing that I know this…. Even with typing this post, I had to decide whether to sit on my couch and… well, do nothing. Or hop on my laptop for a few minutes and bang something out.

Celebrating the small wins is the best trick I know for making yourself feel better in any situation.

Harvard psychologists agree. Also, reminding yourself that you have so many experiences and events to look forward to in your life traveling around the country, your wedding, spanking your children does help to put things into perspective, although it may not totally alter how you currently feel.

This is a difficult one. Even though they may not be able to, just having them listen makes me feel better. Love is a powerful force. And knowing that those who love you truly care about the direction of your life can reinstate hope and a drive to get better.

KEY TWO: COMING TO YOUR SENSES

The insights you learn from your own writing can be invaluable in helping you to understand your state of mind and how you may overcome it. No structure. No theme. No intended outcome or length. Just write. Sometimes all it takes is a couple of words with a pen and paper or laptop and the rest of the words write themselves. Write whatever messed up shit that comes up and filters from your mind to the paper. But each time I write, I learn a little more about myself. The action of writing down everything that is trapped inside of you is a freeing event.

Even when what you write is really messed up, somehow it feels better to let it out onto paper.

Supply And Demand

At times what you see on the page is flat out ugly. Other times, you may find bits of compassion, gratitude, and hope in there. Just let it out and hit the lights. For weeks and weeks I would try to pull myself out of it by trying to push through the blockade of not wanting to workout or whatever. I tried reaching out to a friend from middle school who posted something to Facebook about how depressed she was and how she wished things would be better. I sent her a message saying that I was going through something similar, though on a much smaller scale, and that maybe we should chat to see if we can help one another out.

They all affect people differently, and they all suck. This is what helped me to work my way through depression. What would you add to the list? Please leave a comment below and share your thoughts. PS: I wrote this a year ago when I was in the middle of a depression which began in the winter and laster roughly 5 months.

Thank you to those who helped when when I was low to the ground….

13 Powerful Ways to Overcome Self-Doubt (So You Can Finally Move Forward in Life)

Final word from Daniel: Thanks so much for posting, Robert. Everyone wants to appear strong. I made fun of TEDx earlier, but I actually think this is an incredible video on overcoming depression. Worth a watch. His debut book, Rich20Something, publishes on May 2, Nobody wants to talk about depression. Everyone wants to talk about how great it is to be motivated, driven and happy. We just need the strategies to deal with it.

My friend, Robert James Collier. Robert, take it away. Kinda like eating a cheeseburger when you already feel like shit. I wish it did. None of it worked for me. Celebrate the small wins This, I think more than anything, will help you to deal with your depression.

This quick 20 minute session can greatly help you to shift your self-doubts into optimism and into thinking constructively about your challenge. When you have a setback then you may start to see things through a negative and dark lens. You might see this current setback as something that will simply be your new normal. This way of looking at things can trap you in thinking that there's no point in continuing to take action.

If you, for instance, often get self-doubt before a presentation in school or at work then sharpen your presentation skills. Read a few books about it and practice at home in front of a mirror or in front of a friend.

Or join Toastmasters to get the experience or knowledge you need. A common way to handle self-doubt is to get angry at yourself and your lack of motion. To try to beat yourself up as a way to get yourself to move forward. I have found that being kind and constructive when feeling self-doubt is a better choice.

Trying to plan every move you will make on a journey towards a goal or dream can become draining and lead to quite a bit of self-doubt. I especially loved tip number 4 about comparison.

Self-doubt pushes me back constantly. What it was great in my case was the fact I discovery most of my evil thoughts came from anxiety. I always liked to write and never gave too much attention. These are great tips, and I should practice some of it more. Self doubt is not a good thing, really. To overcome it, you must learn the value of life and find your true happiness.

There are seminars about good quality of life. You can take and learn some in almentor. It holds you back from seizing your opportunities. It makes getting started or finishing things harder than they need to be. Say stop. In your mind, say or shout something like: No, no, no, we are not going down that road again.

Look to the past and awash yourself in the memories. Be real with yourself and ask yourself: How many times when I doubted myself or feared something would happen did that negative thing come into reality after I still took action?
